About Young Disciples

Why does Young Disciples exist?+

Young Disciples exists to help students see their university as a mission field. We saw that many Christian students wanted to live out their faith on campus but didn't know where to begin or who to do it with.

Our heart is to connect and encourage students to pray, read the Bible, make disciples, and share Jesus where they study. We believe God uses ordinary people who are faithful in the small things, and our hope is that more students would come to know Jesus because of the simple obedience of their peers.

Is Young Disciples connected to a church?+

Young Disciples is connected to Discovery Church, located in Melbourne, but it is not exclusive to Discovery attendees. We believe reaching universities is bigger than one church, and we welcome students from all churches and denominations who are united around Jesus and His mission.

What does Young Disciples believe?+

Our statement of belief is still being finalised — we'll add it here soon.

Getting Involved

How do I get involved?+

We would love to have you involved with what the Lord is doing on your campus. You can click on the 'sign up' button to register your interest, and someone from our team will get in touch with you. If you have any questions or thoughts, you can send us a general enquiry through the contact form.

What if there isn't a group at my campus?+

There is a chance you might be the first on your campus to commit to praying. How exciting! Don't worry — this might seem like a big deal, and it is, but not in an intimidating way. One of our team will reach out to you and guide you through what it would look like to start a group on your campus.

By showing your interest, you are not signing your life away or committing to anything straight up, so don't be shy to plug your details in.

What support will I receive if I become a campus leader?+

The last thing we want is for students to feel unsupported as student leaders. As a student leader, you will have access to a range of resources, training, and videos on the student leader portal.

You will also be able to reach out to one of our team at any point to help lead, disciple, and encourage you in the space that you are holding — as long as you bring any questions or struggles you might be finding to them.

Campus Groups

What if only two or three people come?+

That's ok! It's not about how many people gather — we are not chasing numbers or statistics. Your prayers hold power regardless of who is with you. The Bible says in Matthew 18:20 that "For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I with them," so we can pray and gather knowing that the presence of the Lord is within the campus.

What do you actually do when you gather?+

It's pretty simple, but it will differ slightly depending on your campus and who is leading your group. In most cases, you will gather as students and pray for your university campus (maybe you are praying for individual people, a move of God, whatever's on your heart — pray it out!). Sometimes you might open the word together and do a Bible study, or maybe even do some worship or evangelism.

Can students from different churches be part of the same group?+

YES! We want students who represent different churches and denominations. How special is it that we can all unite on campus under the name of Jesus as believers.

Churches

How can my church partner with Young Disciples?+

We believe local churches have a vital role in reaching universities. One of the greatest ways a church can partner with Young Disciples is through prayer — praying for students, campuses, and what God is doing through this movement.

Churches can also encourage students to see their university as a mission field, helping them take what they are learning on Sundays and live it out throughout the week. Whether that looks like supporting students, sharing resources, or partnering financially, we want to work alongside local churches who have a heart to see students encounter Jesus.

If you're a church leader, we would love to connect and explore what partnership could look like. If you're a student, we encourage you to talk with a leader at your church about how your church could support and be involved in what God is doing through Young Disciples.

Does Young Disciples replace my local church?+

No! Young Disciples exists to support and strengthen the local church, not replace it. We believe being planted in a local church is an important part of following Jesus, growing in faith, and belonging to a community of believers.

Young Disciples is a place for students to gather on campus, pray, study the Bible, and live out the mission of Jesus together. But the local church is where we are called to belong, serve, and grow.

If you don't currently have a local church, we would love to help connect you with one where you can find community and grow in your faith.

Practical Questions

Is it free to join?+

Yes! Young Disciples is completely free to be part of. Our heart is to make it simple and accessible for any student who wants to grow in their faith, connect with other believers, and make Jesus known on their campus.

There are no membership fees or costs to attend gatherings. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to be part of a community that encourages them to follow Jesus and live out their faith at university.

I'm a new Christian. Can I still be involved?+

Absolutely. Young Disciples is for students at every stage of their faith journey — from those who have followed Jesus for years to those who are just beginning to explore what it means to know Him. You don't need to have all the answers or be a mature Christian to be involved. We believe growth happens through community, prayer, reading the Bible, and learning from one another.

Whether you're new to faith, asking questions, or wanting to grow deeper in your relationship with Jesus, you are welcome at Young Disciples.

I'm not a Christian. Can I come?+

Yes. You are welcome at Young Disciples. We believe everyone should have a place to ask questions, explore faith, and have honest conversations about Jesus.
